New Music Sunday: Sunless ’97

Oh Radar Maker, you’ve done it again. You’ve managed to bag yourself more points in my book for grabbing these guys while you could. They are Alice, Ed, and Matthew and they live in London and they go by the name Sunless ’97. I’m not at all entirely sure why they’re called that, but I assume it has something to do with the “Wear Sunscreen” essay (it was published in ’97. I’m not just pulling this stuff out of my shiny purple ass, people!) Anywho, I’m so gone on their newest track Wicked Gravity, it’s atmospheric and arresting, with Alice’s beautiful vocals taking the forefront, masterfully layered over haunting melodies. Illuminations sees Warp Records‘ Kwes on production, and is a culmination of everything that is right with music in the present. Fact.

Understated, ambient and kind of trippy. The essential pop sensibility is never lost in the mix. It’s probably easily boxed-off as hipster glo-fi but in reality it’s so much more. Highly recommended especially if you like The xx and Lykke Li. You can pre-order their Making Waves EP here.
